The Shift from River Sand to Manufactured Sand
Due to severe environmental degradation, river bed erosion, and stringent government bans, natural river sand has become both ecologically problematic and prohibitively expensive. Today, Manufactured Sand (M-Sand) produced by three-stage crushing of hard granite rock has emerged as the premier choice in modern engineering.
| Parameter | M-Sand (Manufactured Sand) | River Sand (Natural) |
|---|---|---|
| Compressive Strength | Higher (Cubical particles create better interlocking). | Moderate (Rounded particles slip more easily). |
| Silt & Clay Impurities | Zero organic silt (washed in VSI plants). | Frequently exceeds 8–15% silt (weakens bond). |
| Zone Grading (IS 383) | Precisely graded into Zone II (Concrete) or Zone IV (Plaster). | Inconsistent grain gradation from batch to batch. |
| Cost & Availability | Consistent supply, 30% to 40% more economical. | High cost, black-market pricing, frequent legal bans. |
Important Distinction: M-Sand vs P-Sand
Never use concrete M-Sand for wall plastering! Always procure two distinct grades:
- M-Sand (Zone II, 0 to 4.75mm): Specifically graded with coarser angular particles for RCC foundations, columns, beams, slabs, and brick masonry mortar.
- P-Sand (Zone IV, 0 to 2.36mm): Micro-filtered and thoroughly washed to remove fine stone dust particles below 150 microns. Yields a velvet-smooth wall finish with zero shrinkage crazing.
